Marketing & Public Relations for Small Software Companies

join our team

Are you a marketing professional with considerable experience in the software industry? Join our team!

JMR offers you a great way of growing your business. We provide:

  • Ongoing, project-based work

  • Tools and processes that you can incorporate (or not) into the way you run your business

  • Partners who can do the parts of the job you're not interested in

When you work with JMR, you:

  • Work at home

  • Work full-time or part-time

  • Set your own hours

  • Set your own rates

  • Do the kind of work you enjoy most

  • Work with people you like

There are two types of positions: marketing directors and marketing experts. Marketing directors tend to be generalists, with a lot of software industry experience, who love working with clients. Marketing experts focus on one particular area, like graphic design, website development, or search engine optimization.

Marketing directors

As a marketing director, you are responsible for successfully completing marketing or public relations projects for our clients.

Our clients are all small software companies. They have small marketing budgets and need to get the most out of every dollar they spend.

You work with clients to determine their marketing needs, providing advice on the best approach to take and defining projects. Once the client has decided on a direction, you have the option of performing the work yourself or partnering with another marketing expert to complete the projects. If you choose to partner, you are responsible for:

  • Choosing the appropriate person to perform the work,

  • Arranging for them to do it,

  • Defining the project for them,

  • Assigning tasks,

  • Providing the materials and information they need,

  • Answering their questions,

  • Managing client expectations,

  • Verifying that the work was done properly, and

  • Providing results to the client.

Marketing experts

If there is one type of marketing that you love doing, and you want to do only that, this is a good fit for you.

As a marketing expert, you typically work through marketing directors to deliver projects for clients. One benefit of working through marketing directors is that you are working with someone who understands what information you need to do a good job and is responsible for getting that information and providing it to you.

Getting paid

For either type of position, you work at home and set your own hours. You are paid by the billable hour, so you can work as many or as few hours as you want. We work with you to adjust your client load to the number of hours you want to work.

You set your own rates—charge whatever amount you want to make per hour. You bill us. We pay you. Then we invoice the clients and collect from them. (We mark up what you charge us—that's where we make the money to cover our operating expenses and make a profit.)

You are an independent contractor, so you are responsible for paying your own taxes.

Enhance your skills

You take the responsibility for keeping current your marketing skills and your knowledge of the software industry. The time you spend doing this is not billable.

Most of the information you need is available free over the Internet and through e-mail newsletters. We highly recommend the free e-mail newsletters from SoftwareCEO and MarketingSherpa.

Marketing directors are also responsible for maintaining an understanding of their clients' markets. The clients let us know where we can learn about their market segment.

JMR also invests in e-books, regular books, magazines, CDs and DVDs to help you improve your skills and acquire new skills in many areas. We have dozens of programs and books from a wide variety of marketing gurus. As a JMR partner, you have access to these materials.

Requirements for partners

  • 4+ years of marketing experience

  • 3+ years of experience in the software industry (required for marketing directors, preferred for marketing experts)

  • A commitment to producing the highest quality results for our clients

  • Excellent writing skills

  • Excellent attention to detail

  • Excellent project management skills

  • Deadline-oriented

  • Ability to manage time effectively

  • Highly ethical

  • Nice person (we only work with people we like)

You'll need to provide

  • Office space where you can work (with minimal child or animal noise)

  • An up-to-date computer with basic office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)

  • Any additional software you need, such as Photoshop or WebPosition Gold

  • Internet access, preferably high-speed

  • Up-to-date virus software, firewall, backup procedures

Finally... Can you live up to the promises we make to our clients (at the top of this page in the upper right hand corner) as well as our code of ethics (right below the promises)? If you can, we would love to have you join us.
