Work with people you like
There are two types of positions: marketing
directors and marketing experts. Marketing directors tend
to be generalists, with a lot of software industry experience,
who love working with clients. Marketing experts focus on
one particular area, like graphic design, website development,
or search engine optimization.
Marketing directors
Our clients are all small software companies.
They have small marketing
budgets and need to get the most out of every dollar they
spend.
You work with clients to determine their
marketing needs, providing advice on the best approach to
take and defining projects. Once the client has decided
on a direction, you have the option of performing the work
yourself or partnering with another marketing expert to
complete the projects. If you choose to partner, you are
responsible for:
-
Choosing the appropriate person to perform
the work,
-
Arranging for them to do it,
-
Defining the project for them,
-
Assigning tasks,
-
Providing the materials and information
they need,
-
Answering their questions,
-
Managing client expectations,
-
Verifying that the work was done properly,
and
-
Providing results to the client.
Marketing experts
As a marketing expert, you typically work
through marketing directors to deliver projects for clients.
One benefit of working through marketing directors is that
you are working with someone who understands what information
you need to do a good job and is responsible for getting
that information and providing it to you.
Getting paid
You set your own ratescharge whatever amount
you want to make per hour. You bill us. We pay you. Then
we invoice the clients and collect from them. (We mark up
what you charge usthat's where we make the money to cover
our operating expenses and make a profit.)
You are an independent contractor, so you
are responsible for paying your own taxes.
Enhance your skills
Most of the information you need is available
free over the Internet and through e-mail newsletters. We
highly recommend the free e-mail newsletters from SoftwareCEO
and MarketingSherpa.
Marketing directors are also responsible
for maintaining an understanding of their clients' markets.
The clients let us know where we can learn about their market
segment.
JMR also invests in e-books, regular books,
magazines, CDs and DVDs to help you improve your skills
and acquire new skills in many areas. We have dozens of
programs and books from a wide variety of marketing gurus.
As a JMR partner, you have access to these materials.
